Lake Tahoe is well known as a destination in both summer and winter months. Tahoe’s pristine, clear waters are ideal for watersports in the summer. It’s also a world-class winter destination, with feet of snow and prestigious ski resorts. However, the fall season in Tahoe is often overlooked, and we’re not sure why. Below are a few reasons why we think that you should put Lake Tahoe on your destination list this autumn.
Beautiful Weather
Fall is often called the “locals’ summer.” Beautiful weather, fewer crowds, and calm water make it an ideal time to explore the lake. Tahoe averages 289 sunny days per year. Sunny days and comfortable temperatures are ideal for hiking and exploring. You’ll enjoy trails and vistas all to yourself. Check out a few of our favorite short hikes here. The fewer crowds and calm water make it an ideal time to explore the lake via boat, kayak, or paddleboard, or just sit by the shores on an empty beach to relax with a good book.
Amazing Events
Oktoberfest celebrations abound in North Lake Tahoe in the fall, as well as music, food, and wellness festivals and farmer’s markets. If you’re looking to challenge yourself, compete in one of the many races that are hosted around the lake during the autumn season. Want to relax? Book a yoga class or massage treatment at one of North Tahoe’s many spas and yoga studios. Be sure to check out our activities page for the latest things to do and places to be.
Foliage
Although Tahoe is known for its coniferous forests, there are pockets of quaking aspens and meadows blanketed with golden grasses during autumn. Take a hike or a drive to enjoy some beautiful fall colors on your next trip. Nothing looks better than those bright yellow and orange aspen leaves on a Tahoe blue backdrop.
